( read more. )A dutiful young soldier from 1945, fiercely dedicated to defending his country. He'd lay down his life if it meant saving even a single soul. Chosen as part of a secret military program to pilot a new weapon called a "Sentinel", Miura soon discovers that his true enemies lie beyond World War II.PERSONALITY
Keitaro is determined, loyal, but also compassionate and curious. He tries to keep a level head, but possesses an unyielding resolve to protect his friends and family. It’s a sense that drives him even in the face of daunting challenges. An idealistic soul, he firmly believes in the potential for a brighter future and keeps faith in his ability to make a positive impact, shaping his decisions and actions. Loyalty is a defining trait. He is fiercely devoted to his loved ones and to his country, Japan. Even though he harbors doubt, on whether his efforts really are enough to protect and defend them, he puts their well-being above his own. A selflessness that exemplifies his compassionate heart. Keitaro’s empathetic nature allows him to hear the struggles of others and seek to understand them. At the same time, though, his optimism may come into contention with the very same 'truths' he would strive to defend. His values, shaped by his upbringing in Japan of the 1930s and 40s, shine through when pitted against certain aspects of the future. He can be blunt.
BACKGROUND Keitaro lives with his little sister, Chihiro, at the Kurabes' house—family friends—in Ashitaba, Japan witnessing the cataclysmic events of this time. After using his Sentinel to defend an attack on the Japanese mainland by, what he believes to be, American forces he unintentionally shifts to the year 1985. There he is devastated to learn about Japan's defeat in the war, and determined to find a way back in time and use the Sentinel to turn the outcome of the war around. But he also discovers his love for hamburger steak. Even though he finds himself discomforted by the future of 1985, he retains pride in his nation and its ability to rebuild after the defeat. He makes acquaintance with Natsuno Minami and crushes on her hard.Attacking Japan is actually an extraterrestrial invasion, not only in 1945, but also in the 80s and at the same time in decades beyond. The Sentinels, piloted by Keitaro and 12 other students out of these varied time periods, brought together, are the only hope of defending Earth against the kaiju. Unlike his comrades, Keitaro isn't able to summon his Sentinel readily at first. [ 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Spoilers ]
The truth is that neither can the Sentinels time-travel, nor are the invading forces aliens, in a way that the students typically understand it.
By 2188, humankind no longer lives on Earth and is at the brink of destruction due to a nanomachine virus. In an effort to preserve humanity's history culture, experiences, etc. the 15 people surviving on a satellite colony in Earth's orbit hatch "Project Ark". This is a plan to transport Earth's flora and fauna, historical, cultural knowledge across the universe, in hopes of finding a new, inhabitable planet. The DNA of these 15 scientists is also sent on the voyage. Millions of years have passed when the probes sent into space have discovered a viable planet, and as such begin terraformation as well as growing these cloned bodies in pods on board the spaceship.
Meanwhile, in order to provide these "new" people with experiences and consciousness that will have shaped them once they awaken, they will each live a life in the simulation of a Japanese city. The architects of Project Ark were, unable to decide on which one time period to recreate and thus, essentially, what point in time to reset humanity to. So they modelled the 1940s, 80s, 2020s, 60s and 2100 each in a distinct so-called Sectors. Keitaro's DNA comes from Project Ark's design engineer, who was fascinated by life in the early Shōwa era. The 1940s were, being without a doubt a significant time in human history, to be recreated in Sector 5.
What the students experience as time travel is their consciousness being shifted from one Sector to another. Because nanomachines in them can do that. It's also faulty code, that had been inserted into the nanomachines' programming as a means of manipulation, that summons the kaiju to destroy the 'Earth' every sixteen years from its starting point. Keitaro's nanomachines come to carry a piece of code that overwrites the DD-246 virus, responsible for causing Ei Sekigahara and Ryoko Shinonome's memory loss. For anyone who comes into contact with him, the ability to summon a Sentinel is also reestablished.
In the end the students manage to get out of the 'loops' and exit the simulation, just as humankind's new home is ready to be inhabited by them.
